The Art of Living Self-Care Program in Cancer Survivorship and Living with Chronic Illness
The Absenger Cancer Education Foundation (ACEF) serves West Michigan’s Cancer Survivors and people living with chronic illness through the Art of Living Self-Care Program.
To improve the quality of life of West Michigan’s cancer survivors and caregivers, and persons living with chronic illness we need to create an enhanced dialogue. This dialogue will have to be between patients and health care professionals, as well as an interdisciplinary dialogue between healthcare professionals.
This dialogue must be about the suitable and evidence-based use of nutrition and mind-body medicine modalities in combination with conventional medicine for cancer and disease prevention, as well as during and after treatment.
It is the Absenger Cancer Education Foundation’s (ACEF) vision and mission to contribute to this dialogue. This will be achieved by conducting and promoting the science that allows for wise and informed decision-making pertaining the integration of evidence-based mind-body modalities.
Three primary foci serve as guiding principles for the Absenger Cancer Education Foundation toward achievement of its mission and vision:
Focus One: Integration
On our Spring Lake campus, we will offer instructions in mind-body medicine modalities for which there is quality scientific evidence of safety and efficacy to cancer survivors, caregivers, people living with chronic disease and healthcare professionals. Thus, individuals are empowered to integrate mind-body medicine modalities safely into their health care regimen, while healthcare professionals will be better-informed to make appropriate recommendations.
Focus Two: Education
ACEF will provide educational opportunities (such as speaker series, lecture series, workshops and evening lecture series) pertaining mind-body medicine modalities in cancer survivorship and for people living with chronic disease at no or low cost to health care professionals and the public.
Focus Three: Research
Funding permitting; ACEF will extend research for mind-body medicine modalities that exhibit promise in cancer survivorship and chronic disease conditions, albeit not thoroughly explored in conventional biomedical research.
Absenger Cancer Education Foundation (ACEF) Vision:
Through rigorous research, we will contribute to the field of mind-body medicine for chronic disease conditions, cancer survivorship, and prevention of cancer and chronic illness.
Absenger Cancer Education Foundation (ACEF) Mission:
We will empower and improve the quality of life of West Michigan’s cancer survivors, their loved ones, caregivers, and people living with chronic disease through research, education, and integration of evidence-based nutrition and mind-body modalities.
