The Alternative Medicine Blog’s
CAM News, Volume I, Issue 7, July 2006
My dear friend,
As you might know, I have been enrolled in Everglades University’s Bachelors of Science Program with a Major in Alternative Medicine since January 2005. I am expecting to graduate in December 2007.
I first conceived the idea of the Adolf & Maria Absenger Cancer Foundation on March 12, 1999, receiving condolences from a long line of relatives and friends of my dad’s, at his funeral. The comments, which haunted me for some time, were all the same. A kind, giving person like my dad should not have suffered a long, slow, painful death from cancer. I did not know how, but I was going to make sure that my dad’s suffering was not in vain. I was going to create something in honor of my mom and dad. My dad was certainly not the only person suffering “from” esophageal cancer in the family. Looking at the cumulative events of the last 7 years, which I thought to be unrelated, it is almost eerie how the subconscious mind shaped events in order to bring all this about. Today however, I find myself in a peculiar situation, creating something, I wanted to some time ago, yet not consciously making it my life’s purpose, or finding myself particularly planning for it. I just tuned into my thought process, paid attention to what I deeply felt and made my moves accordingly, serendipitously creating the Alternative Medicine Blog and the Adolf & Maria Absenger Cancer Foundation. How about that!
I am very excited about what has been happening here at the “Blog” and I am looking forward to be bringing you reliable health information pertaining to the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. You can read more about my credentials at the blog’s About Page.
Today’s latest news is very hard to follow, especially the so called “health news”. One day a particular cure or vitamin is the latest fashion, the next day it is humanities worst evil. By creating the Alternative Medicine Blog I am hoping to take away from your confusion of which cures and modalities work, and which “potions” are better left on the shelves. All information found on this blog will be backed by scientific research, especially posts pertaining to your well being. By focusing on relevant, sound, scientific research we can close the gap between the allopathic, a mostly reactionary model of medicine, practiced in this country, and a more holistic approach based on the prevention of disease. There are great modalities in both models, but unfortunately, until recently, there has been a tug-of-war happening between Complementary/ Alternative Medicine and the Allopathic “Western” model, rather than trying to find common ground. And clearly, the loser in this battle has been the health care consumer, mainly you.
Once practitioners of both systems can put their egos aside and really focus on what is best for the patient, we can move to a new paradigm of medicine. This model of medicine will be truly integrative, putting the patient and his/ her needs first. We have a long way to go, there is a lot of educating to do, and I promise, I will do my part on bringing you the latest news and facts about Alternative Medicine.
First things first. Keeping up to date is easier than you might think. You can subscribe to the Alternative Medicine Blog via RSS/ Atom Feed, or you can bookmark the Alternative Medicine Blog to del.ico.us, bookmarks you can access on any computer, not just your own, better yet, set the Alternative Medicine Blog as your home page. I hope to provide you with a forum in which it is possible for you to communicate your experiences about health care, what health means to you individually, and mostly, what you are doing in order to keep disease at bay. We want to hear from you and by contributing your own content via the “post a comment” link at the end of each post, you take ownership of a little piece of cyberspace with like-minded health care consumers.
We have been putting important educational series about Crohn’s Disease on-line. We also featured a series of posts on Mind-Body Communication.
